Poet David Shook recounts being detained by the Commissioner of Police in Equatorial Guinea, as he and a skeleton crew of rogue filmmakers attempt to smuggle in their equipment, in order to find missing poet Marcelo Ensema Nsang, who was tortured in the late 1970s under the Macías regime.

Ultimately extricated from his interrogation by his handlebar moustache, Shook provides a thumbnail portrait of Equatorial Guinea's sociopolitical present, including the West's embrace of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, despite his undemocratic reign as the longest serving president of any African nation, and his horrendous record of human rights violations.

David Shook is a poet, translator, and filmmaker in Los Angeles.

Detained at Kilometer Zero Pocket Apocalypse Travel Book 1 eBook David Shook Reviews

This was a fascinating read from an up and coming poet whose take on this niche African country was both refreshing and insightful. Considering I had never even heard of the country to begin with, I find myself yearning to learn more in order to fully understand it's plight. David Shook is to literature what Haggis is to Scottish cuisine.
When the mustachioed gringo tells the Comisario Policial that what brings him to Equatorial Guinea is its literature, "especially its poetry," I think of Rick Blaine, who "came to Casablanca for the waters." But I soon realize how wrong I am. David Shook's touching portraits of his cheerful guide Bosquete and of Marcelo Ensema Nsang, who finds precarious refuge at a Claretian monastery outside Bata, will send readers looking for any and all available work by these brave poets. Shook's commitment to Equatorial Guinea's literature is sincere, heroic, and necessary. This short memoir is more than a masterful piece of travel writing. Shook's gifts for novelistic detail, evocative characterization, and suspense invite comparison with Graham Greene. Like Greene's most admirable protagonists, our poet-documentarian greets existential threat with ironic sangfroid -- a stiff (if hairy) upper lip. I look forward to the film.
